Proposal to mark the site of the former Psalm Oak as part of the Purley Regeneration plans
Fiona Gibbon is preparing a report to submit as part of the regeneration proposals. She states in her email to the Parish “because I believe some attention will be given to signage and environmental improvements. Charles Trefusis has given his full support, and suggested that I contact you so that, if possible, the proposal may be seen to have support across the broader Christian community. Brief details are below, and the current draft of the report is attached.
An ancient oak stood at Purley Cross until the 1870s, and formed the focal point for the starting point of the regular beating of the bounds ceremony for Croydon. The 100th psalm was sung as part of the proceedings, and children even sang from within the branches of the tree, so it must have been a memorable experience! I am hoping that a sign, or even actually a new oak, would be a reminder of our spiritual heritage and a significant addition to Purley Cross.”
