HCPT Groups 551 and 552 are known collectively as “Fr Luke’s Group” as it has been led for many years by Fr Luke Verhees who was the parish priest at Holy Cross, Carshalton, but is now chaplain to the Royal Marsden.
The group consists of about 80-90 people comprisng elderly, disabled, helpers, nurses, drivers and some children. The group stays at Hosanna House in Bartrès which is a village just outside Lourdes where St Bernadette spent part of her childhood.
Fr Luke’s Group goes to Lourdes each year in early October, leaving on a Friday and returning the following Friday. The programme for the week includes many visits down to Lourdes, a trip to Gavarnie high up in the Pyrenees as well as visits down to Bartrès. The group has a real family feel and many members have been going with Fr Luke for a number of years.
A contingent come from Purley each year. The group leaders are Peter Thompson and Bridget Barrett.
